Nathan Kress - No Expectations
BY Lucia Tran
Published: November 20, 2009
"I didn't know what to expect," said Nathan Kress. Widely recognized, he is one of the three faces of the famous Nick television series, iCarly, and had no idea what he dived in for as he signed up for the biggest project of his seventeen years of life.
Already on a fresh season of the show, the third season is yet even better. "We started production in May of last year" and still producing 45 episodes, which is more than most television seasons. Based on a couple of friends who work on a popular web series, iCarly also enthused others to create "their own web shows, too."
The show sprung from the midst of 2007 where iCarly became the most watched television show on Nick. Its target demographic is 'tweens' although thousands of young adults tune in to watch the show as well.
Due to the heavy following, the iCarly franchise has increased in the amount of products produced. Lunchboxes, clothing, and even "trading cards" have been on sale on the shelves of "Limited Too" and wherever toys are sold. "It's really trippy...when I walk by Limited Too and see an iCarly wall," Kress began, "it's been really weird seeing my face on products!" Owning a charades game and trading cards given by his older brother, Kress owns nothing more of the iCarly merchandise. "I had no idea what to expect" from the show.
Among his cast, Kress was amazed by the vocals of co-star Jennette McCurdy (who was previously interviewed by Inspire). "I had no clue that Jennette McCurdy was a singer!" Kress continued, "Eventually, I heard her singing as she was walking down the hall, and wow!" He declares that was the leading surprise that he had learned among his co-stars.
And through his famous role as "Freddy," fans recognize him everywhere. One day, Kress was practicing driving and a swarm of fans recognized him in the streets. "I was a stop sign, and a bus full of kids...stopped by the side of the street...eventually, one of the kids recognized who I was and called all of her friends over...and through the windows, they asked if I was Freddy. They started screaming and whipping out their cell phones to take pictures."
His career started early when he began reciting monologues from children's shows such as "Barneys, Vegetales, Mr.Rogers" around the age of three. Kress was an "early talker" which ignited his profession in acting. One of the first acting jobs he remembers was working in voiceover on the film, "Babe in the City" where he portrayed a "monkey" and "the director directed [him] over the phone."
With such a busy schedule, Kress still remains well educated as he attends a regular school part time and is also homeschooled. He sparked an interest in photography which he "goes to [photography] class on Mondays." A tech-lover himself, Kress is a proud "PC. I don't think Macs are easy to use!"
Kress recently received his driver's license "in September and been driving ever since." He currently owns a 2004 Rav4 which is suitable for his busy life, but hopes to snag a "bargain" for a 2010 Camaro.
iCarly is one of his greatest accomplishments, and with wisdom beyond years, Kress remains active in acting and continue pursuing happiness along the way.
